Black
Rock
Primary School is located in Arkaringa Crescent,
Black Rock which is a South Eastern suburb of Melbourne. The school is situated in a unique
bayside setting. It is bordered by Port Phillip
Bay
to the west and Royal Melbourne and Sandringham Golf Clubs to the
east. The environment is secure for its students and provides
excellent recreational and sporting facilities with its adventure
playgrounds and full - sized oval.
The school community is both progressive and committed to ensuring that
Black Rock Primary students receive the best education available.
The school’s learning and teaching programs are based on the belief
that every student has the ability and the right to develop and
progress at his/her own rate and to learn in an independent and
happy environment. Students are encouraged to take risks with their
learning, to be independent thinkers and to display initiative.
Cooperation and teamwork are valued and the school has high
expectations of its students in their academic, creative and
physical endeavours.
Parents, students and staff work in partnership to provide a safe, caring
and challenging environment with a significant emphasis on fostering
self-esteem. A range of structures and programs to cater for
individual differences are in place at the school. All children have
Individual Learning Improvement Plans, the Thinking Curriculum is a
priority, there is parallel learning in years 5 and 6, a SEAL
(Selected Entry for Accelerated Learners) program operates in the
grade 3/4 area. Support programs such as Reading Recovery, Maths
Intervention and Language Support are provided and the Information
Technology program caters for differing abilities and particular
needs and talents.

A strong emphasis is placed on achievement in both English and
Mathematics, whilst at the same time providing a rounded curriculum
in each of the other learning Strands through an Integrated
Curriculum approach incorporating the Thinking Curriculum. In
recognition of the importance of a sound foundation for students we
have incorporated the Early Years Literacy and Numeracy Programs
into our daily programs for students P- 4 and the Middle Years
Literacy and Numeracy programs are a feature of Years 5 and 6.
We have an extensive Music program which offers experiences in Choir,
musical instruments and performances for all students. All students
participate in the specialist programs of LOTE (Japanese), Art,
Music and PE. We have a fully computerised Library/Resource Centre,
and an extensive Information Technology Centre. Ancillary programs
such as intensive swimming, Perceptual Motor Program, Life
Education, camps, Interschool Sport, Cross Age Tutoring,
Intervention Programs, Prep Buddies, Concerts, incursions and
excursions, safety and traffic education are regular features of our
programs.
An excellent Out Of School Hours Program provides support for parents and
also provides a wide variety of activities for children attending
the program.
